The 140 series is the number range TRAI has assigned for promotional and telemarketing voice calls in India. When you call from a 140 number, the recipient can immediately tell it's a marketing call from a registered business — which improves trust and reduces the chance of being auto-flagged as spam. Service and transactional calls use the separate 160 / 1600 series instead.

DLT (Distributed Ledger Technology) is the regulator-mandated platform where commercial senders are registered and verified. You register as a Principal Entity (PE), link a Registered Telemarketer, and register your voice and consent templates, which your telecom service provider then approves. They separate two kinds of calls. The 140 series is strictly for promotional and marketing outreach, while the 160 / 1600 series is for service and transactional calls — for example a bank confirming a transaction. Keeping promotional and transactional traffic on different series helps customers recognise what a call is about and helps regulators curb spam and fraud.

Under TRAI's TCCCPR-2018 framework you must capture verifiable consent before making promotional calls, and scrub your lists against the National Customer Preference Register and DND. Consent is recorded on DLT and shouldn't extend beyond the purpose it was given for. You're also expected to respect calling-time windows and frequency limits, and to offer an opt-out. Calls to opted-out users without valid consent are treated as Unsolicited Commercial Communication.

Content templates registered in the wrong category can be blacklisted, and a single content template can't be mapped to multiple headers. Messages or calls with an undefined or mismatched telemarketer chain are rejected, and content with URLs, APKs, OTT links or callback numbers must be whitelisted in advance. In cases of misuse, TRAI can suspend a sender's traffic immediately, with longer suspensions for repeat offenders — which is exactly why we only list providers who get the template and routing setup right.
